Justice in Newark: Jesse Dunbar Charged in Tragic Killing of 9-Year-Old Yasin Morrison

NEWARK, NJ – A senseless act of violence shattered a Newark family when 9-year-old Yasin Morrison was fatally shot on January 31, 2025. The young boy, who was autistic and nonverbal, was stepping out of a car with his father and sister near his grandmother’s home when bullets tore through the air. He was struck and killed instantly, leaving a community in shock and mourning.
Authorities now say they have the man responsible. On February 5, law enforcement officials announced the arrest of 36-year-old Jesse J. Dunbar II, a Newark resident, charging him with first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault, and multiple weapons offenses.
Investigators believe the shooting was not intended for Yasin or his family, but that does little to ease the pain of a life stolen too soon. Another adult man was also injured in the shooting but survived.
A City Outraged
The killing of Yasin Morrison has sparked outrage across Newark. Community members and activists are calling for justice and an end to the gun violence plaguing the city. Vigils have been held in Yasin’s memory, with mourners demanding stronger action to keep streets safe.
“This is every parent’s worst nightmare,” said one Newark resident. “A child should never have to fear for their life just stepping out of a car.”
The Arrest
Jesse J. Dunbar II was taken into custody following an investigation led by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force, working alongside Newark police. Officials have not yet disclosed a motive for the shooting or whether Dunbar had prior criminal history related to gun violence.
Dunbar is now facing life in prison if convicted. Authorities are continuing their investigation, urging anyone with further information to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office tips line at 1-877-TIPS-4EC (1-877-847-7432).
What’s Next?
As Newark mourns the loss of a child whose life had barely begun, the focus now shifts to the courtroom. Will justice be served? Will this arrest bring peace to Yasin’s grieving family?
For now, the community waits—and hopes that Yasin Morrison’s tragic death will not be in vain.
